Asylum of Broken Souls
The everlasting bleakness of this ungodly place ails you. It greets you, again and again. Once more, when you slowly open your eyes. A thin ray of sunshine pours into your room, or rather cell, from a small gap between the blocks of the wall behind you. It’s taunting, yet soothing at the same time. It evokes something haunting deep within you…yes, the thirst for freedom. You wish to tread upon the lands of the outside world. You want to see trees around you, hear the birds in the sky.
But alas, you cannot. For before you, stands a door – one that can never be open. Not by you, at least. The sensation grows stronger, and you are well-aware that you reside in an environment completely opposite of your dreams and wishes. You walk on solid stone. You see nothing but walls and a door. You hear only the screaming and wailing of other, though perhaps more ill-fated souls.
this is your sanctuary;

...this is your tomb.
You know why you are here and what you must do in order to stay sane. You know that you cannot talk to anyone else, only one person. But what you do not know is who exactly this person is.
And so, you sling a device akin to a mobile phone from your pocket. The screen lights up, and your fingers begin to dance across its surface. However, the action is immediately interrupted by a notification.

You gulp thickly, proceeding to read it.

Hello, my friend! How are you feeling today?
This time, though, you rebuff to reply. This person has no business interrogating you. They never really helped you. And besides, you can retain your sanity without them. Thus, you just read new messages as they come.

The door suddenly starts opening ever so slowly, and a violent shiver assaults your bones. You stand with your back against the wall, shuddering. But once the door finally opens, you see that no one is there.

Anyway, the reason I put ??? in the title is because the identity of reader's correspondent is open to interpretation (as well as the reader's sanity). As such, he/she can be your favorite anime character, your favorite movie character, my OC, it can be anyone you want, really. I personally don't consider this a fanfic, but rather an original one-shot. However, it can be a fanfic to some of you, since you're allowed to imagine whatever character you wish.
